  • Demonstrates a strong and thorough understanding of the evolution of the American news media from colonial times to the present; and

  • Writing assignment is thoroughly researched, uses multiple sources, provides outstanding in-depth critical analysis, illustrates a mastery of footnote (or other) citations, and shows a superior ability to support thesis statement with solid evidence.

  • Demonstrates a strong understanding of the current economic, philosophical and political structure of the American news media; and

  • Demonstrates a strong understanding of the evolution of the American news media from colonial times to the present; and

  • Writing assignment is well researched, uses multiple sources, provides good critical analysis, illustrates effective use of footnote (or other) citations, and shows an ability to support thesis statement with evidence.

  • Demonstrates basic understanding of the current economic, philosophical and political structure of the American news media; and

  • Demonstrates an elementary understanding of the evolution of the American news media from colonial times to the present; and

  • Writing assignment is inadequately poorly researched, contains grammatical, spelling and factual errors, is overly general, contains few footnotes or other citations of sources, is poorly written, and provides no evidence to support thesis statement.
